Iris Vackar
A senior at McNeil High School, Iris will be attending Texas State University, where she will major in Sound Recording Technology and plans to participate in a treble choir.
While in high school, Iris has been an active choir member, has participated in musical theater productions, and has directed the music program at her church’s Vacation Bible School. Iris’ recommender, Wendi Burwinkel, said, “Iris is one of the most reliable, responsible, and dedicated students I’ve ever worked with. She is an inspiration to other members of our programs.”
In addition to singing, Iris writes her own music and plays multiple instruments – including the piano, guitar, mandolin and ukelele. She cites singer/songwriter, Brandi Carlisle, as a big inspiration.
Iris has been singing – and sharing her music with her extended family and community – as long as she can remember. In her application, Iris wrote, “Ever since I was a little girl, singing Celine Dion in the back of mom’s car, I’ve always wanted to sing. When I’m singing, it’s as if everything just feels better and sound flows out easier than my own breath.”
The scholarship committee was particularly inspired by Iris’ future plans and moved by what her recommender had to say about them: “Iris has really incredible goals of how to use her talent and musical knowledge to help others. I don’t think there is a more noble action than choosing to work in a field you love, but in a capacity that allows you to find fulfillment through helping and supporting other artists.”
You are a bright star, Iris – Tapestry Singers wishes you all the best!
